Fun and Friendship at Brechin Lanes
(reprinted from Nanaimo News Bulletin - Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010)
With the start of another season of league bowling comes an annual 'reunion' at Brechin Lanes.
"It is really amazing to see how league bowling can bring people together like this," says Brechin Lanes owner Ray Brittain.  "With all the hustle and bustle these days, I guess people need to have an opportunity to get out on a weekly basis with friends and acquaintances.  League bowling allows people to do just that - I have witnessed so many new friendships develop in our leagues here."
The social aspect is one advantage of league bowling, but not the only one, according to Brittain.  Others include exercise, competition, and sheer enjoyment.  Add to that the fact that regular league bowlers range in age from 4 to 96, and you've got the perfect recreational activity.
Don't feel that you're a strong enough bowler?  "Not to worry," says Brittain.  "Everybody sets their own level, based on the average of all the games they've bowled in the current season, and you are competing against your own average."
All leagues start after Labour [D]ay.  To register, call Brechin Lanes at (250)753-2341.

League Bowler Bowls Third 900 Triple of Season
Larry Cross, who bowls in the Wednesday Classic league, bowled a 913 triple on November 4th, with individual game scores of 233, 373, and 307.   Many bowlers would be elated to achieve a 900 triple just once, but this marked Cross' third 900+ triple so far this season.  Cross had previously achieved two 900+ triples in a single season, but this is the first time that he has done so three times.  What is even more remarkable is the fact that the league still has 20 more sessions remaining.  Incidentally, his other 900 triples were: 965 on September 9, 2009; and 924 on September 23, 2009.

League Bowlers Win Thanksgiving Turkeys!!
It has become tradition at Brechin Lanes in the two weeks before Thanksgiving and Christmas, to give turkeys as prizes.  League bowlers who bowl three strikes in a row are eligible to enter this free draw for a turkey.  Did you know that the term 'turkey' in bowling began early in the 20th century, when scoring was much more difficult, and bowling proprietors would give a LIVE turkey to anybody who could bowl three strikes in a row??

This season's first turkey draw took place on Thursday, October 1, and the winner was Pearl McMullin, who bowls in the Monday Night Mixed league.  The second drw was on Thursday, October 8, and the winner was Todd Spracklin, a bowler in the Thursday Pleasant Valley Mixed league.  Both bowlers received a family-sized turkey, complete with cranberry sauce.
Half Season League Bowling Winners
Before each bowling season, Brechin Lanes publishes advertisements in the Nanaimo News Bulletin and Nanaimo Daily News/Harbour City Star.  Part of these advertisements is a ballot that league bowlers can fill out and enter to win one of two free 1/2 seasons of league bowling - one for a new bowler, and one for a returning bowler.  This year, we received so many entries from returning bowlers that we have added some additional prizes.  This year's winners (drawn Sept. 30, 2009) are:
New Bowler
Shelley Couvier - Tuesday Club 55+ - Free 1/2 season of league bowling

Returning Bowlers
Joyce Crawford - Wednesday Matinee - Free 1/2 season of league bowling
